Joshua's Flowers

Among nature’s myriad of gifts are flowers.

Countless hearts and minds have historically been moved to recreate a flower's artistry in various forms.  Speaking of far more than beauty, flowers are a universal language in itself--long used to communicate deeper messages spontaneously in the absence of words.

Imagine replicating flowers by translating simple shapes and lines to represent a visual idea of one’s favorite blossoms--the creative possibilities are endless!

Joshua L. 6yo  /  Mixed Media / Joshua's Flowers

For this project, 6-year-old Joshua was first asked to draw as many random basic shapes on vellum paper as he  wanted. He drew circles, squares, rectangles, triangles.

Now came the challenge in his art class:  Imagine these shapes as flowers!

Using lines and more shapes, Joshua, using his imagination, created and designed flowers out of the basic shapes he first drew.

Once all the flowers were created, he was instructed to draw pots for these. Without knowing beforehand where to position the pots, he worked with whatever spaces were available which then became an opportunity for a creative challenge.

With the use of mixed media, Joshua colored the flowers and pots using markers then painted the background and foreground with tempera paint. We then introduced using oil pastel as a new avenue of exploring and subduing colors.  Before the tempera paint completely dried up, he applied white oil pastel on top of the tempera paint.

The result is a lovely display of textures which Joshua, a playful 6-year-old who loves creating imaginary characters with amazing detail, very much appreciated.

As he viewed his final work, he proudly said, "I like it. It's from my imagination."

Well done, Joshua! We like it, too.  :)
