ART101
Art 101 is a technical course in understanding and applying the elements and principles of design—the building blocks of art. The course begins with proto-drawing non-representational forms then transitions to familiar subjects such as still life, flora, fauna, portrait and figure. This step-by-step course offers a variety of exercises using line art, hatching, shading and pointillism, while teaching concepts like qualities of lines, balance, dominance, unity, etc. With the right materials, techniques, patience and diligence, you can confidently bring your artistic skill to the next level!
This curriculum-based, structured art course has 10 modules and counting. Each module has 10 sessions running 1 hour and 20 minutes each time. Activities are ideal for 12 years old to adults. Kids ages 10-11 with good observational skills and a mature approach to learning may be allowed to join this program.

Module 1: Pointillism and Variations of Hatching
Just like any other serious venture in the fine arts, begin learning the fundamentals using simple marks. Start by exploring the creative possibilities of dots all the way to exercises on different types and qualities of lines. In addition to applying dots into a tangible form, make tonal strips of hatching techniques as preparation for Module 2.
Module 2: Application of Cross and Tick Hatching
Learn the methods and graphic qualities of crosshatching and tick hatching techniques. Projects are done in a systematic approach where guidelines are being laid to establish basic proportions and postures. Start the activity by rendering the outline and contour lines of subjects such as an unfinished portrait and a perching bird. Finalize illustrations using strokes of dark, mid, and light values with varying densities.
Module 3: Application of Parallel Hatching and Combinations of Hatching Techniques
Each type of mark expresses a particular visual texture that's unique. This module reinforces a clear understanding of how different line strokes can be used to convey texture. Capture the surface quality of a mushroom through parallel hatching techniques, then advance to combinations of hatching marks using a variety of colored ballpoint to learn about structural composition.
Module 4: Intersection of Reality and Abstraction
Aside from leveling up the use of hatching techniques in shading, this module explores art form showing intersection of reality and abstraction. You will look at ways on how to modify an object from its original appearance to create new and surreal imagery.
Module 5: Deconstructed and Smooth Shading
Create a sense of volume and mass! Grasp the powerful effects of light and shade in representing portraits. Learn to recognize and apply tonal gradation in the form of fragmented and smooth shading.
Module 6: Transforming Object Triptych
Completely understand and apply tonal values by drawing objects in different phases. Render triptych series using different pencil grades, stumps and eraser pencil in an art style that seeks to reproduce highly realistic expressions.
Module 7: Stylization Through Tessellation
Tessellate and glide your drawing from realistic rendition to its stylized form using colored pencils. Create patterns that display figure-ground illusions using a natural method of rhythmic organization in decorative art and a jewel-tone color palette!
Module 8: Naturalistic Figure Drawing
Create illustrative figure drawing in the style of JC Leyendecker's work! Learn the basics of drawing the core anatomy all the way to applying fine details. Using colored pencils and concepts of vibrancy, contrast, light, shadow, and negative space, create a harmonious figure and compelling hair and drapery.
