Gouache Painting
Explore and appreciate the characteristics, versatility and techniques of water-soluble and opaque paints! In this course, make your first strokes by carrying out experiments on how to reactivate paints when dry. Learn basic brushstroke styles and how to apply colors in various technical ways to create textures. No previous knowledge is necessary! This step-by-step class teaches you how to identify geometric figures in plants, animals and objects all the way to creating a composition. Discover how knowing this painting style can produce so many versatile, sometimes unexpected appearances on paper!
This theme-based, structured art course is divided into 7 modules. One module has 10 sessions running for 1 hour and 20 minutes each (some modules run for 1 hour and 30 minutes). We have classes for teens, adults and kids not younger than 8 years old.

Module 1: Buds and Florets
Find the perfect balance of water and paint while maintaining the right opacity of gouache. Unearth the qualities of blocking, layering, scumbling, and dry blending in a non-intimidating approach. This module is perfect for kids and beginners!
Module 2: Potted Plants
Study the principles of design as you arrange different floral elements in a single composition. Start by applying concepts of symmetry and proportion at the very start of the sketch. Apply contrast as you learn ways to create hues of green and brown using the colors in your tubes and pans!
Module 3: Flora and Fauna
Level up and experiment on your flora and fauna composition using the staining technique. Also known as painting on toned grounds, cover an area of your substrate with a layer of paint to serve as your painting's foundation. Similar to watercolor, this process can efficiently and effectively be used to swathe parts such as ground and sky!
Module 4: Landscape
Develop a deeper understanding of the versatility of gouache in painting a landscape scenery. Create a variety of textures and patterns using different mark making techniques. The landscape scene is broken down in stages to learn painting in depth through layering with gouache.
Module 5: Still Life (Slice of Cake)
Drawing inspiration from still life, discover the theory of color in and how it transforms a painting. Starting with drawing that relies on keen observation, details will then be reinforced as glazes of colors are applied on contour lines and shapes. Tonal values, color and brushwork will be key components of the painting.
Module 6: Gestural Brush Strokes (Portrait)
This module is an introduction to expressionism using gestural brush strokes in painting a portrait. Aside from learning to draw the anatomy of the human head and capturing the subject’s emotion, students will also explore and apply Fauvism - an art movement characterized by bold brush work and wild colors. The project for this module zooms in on the importance of form and value to create a dynamic portrait in gouache.
Module 7: Visual Storytelling with Gouache
Tell a story without saying anything! Using layers of rhythm, character, imagery, and other poetic aspects, construct a visual narrative using a range of gouache painting techniques. Enhance your visual symbolism by drawing fun scenarios that expresses the inner world!
